SUZANNE M. ADLOF PH.D., ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Last year, I had the pleasure of hosting Carrie Hahn as a guest speaker for my Advanced Literacy course for second year master’s students in speech-language pathology. She captivated the students’ attention from the moment she began speaking, sharing stories from her wide-ranging career as a speech-language pathologist and as a mother of two children who have each encountered different varieties of ableism in their own lives.
Her stories resonated deeply with all of us, demonstrating how ableist systems and beliefs impact individuals with disabilities. In addition to highlighting the importance of empathy, understanding, and advocacy to change these systems, Carrie shared practical strategies that students could immediately implement to better support their clients on a day-to-day basis.
Carrie’s passion for her work and her commitment to breaking down barriers was evident throughout the presentation. Student feedback about the presentation was uniformly positive, and several commented that it was one of the most impactful presentations of the whole course. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from her and would highly recommend her to anyone seeking an engaging and inspiring speaker.
